How the adidas Ultra Boost Ruined My Taste for Other Sneakers

adidas ultra boost theshoegame
This year I made a purchase that ultimately ruined my taste in sneakers. It also happened to be the best thing I’ve been introduced to since Tri-Blend tshirts.

I grew up in the Bronx. My sneaker catalogue started off like everyone else.

All Black Nike Air Force 1s and a pair of Wheat Timbs for the Winter.

Side note: I vividly remember playing Ball in my Timbs a couple of times just so my Uptowns didn’t get destroyed during Gym class lmao.

Both shoes set the bar in terms of style and comfort level for me. In retrospect, I was wearing a bag of bricks and cement blocks on my feet. Shout out to Moms though.

Anyways, in 2005 I discovered Nike Dunk SBs. Zoom Air insoles and butter soft uppers were enough to ditch Air Forces and Timbs.

Dunk SBs, the Jordan 1, Vans SK8 Hi, and Air Max 90 dominated my rotation up until now.

Interview with Ben Herath who designed the adidas Ultra Boost

Personally, I never paid attention to adidas running sneakers because they looked too technical. And where I come from, ladies won’t look at you twice for wearing those type of shoes or you’d be laughed off the block.

When I was young, sh*t like that mattered you know?

That all changed as soon as the first images of the adidas Ultra Boost dropped. Here’s the tweet to prove it (in before the Kanye co-sign):

G-Roc attended the adidas media event and claimed the comfort level was ralph level. I’ve known this dude for 10 years, he wouldn’t gas me up with lies just because adidas paid for the trip. So I took his word seriously.

Living in Las Vegas I had a really hard time finding Ultra Boosts in stores. No lie, $180 is a lot to spend on a new silhouette you’ve yet to try on.

I was being picky about the purple heel on the OG colorway, but when that White colorway hit the internet my hypebeast senses started tingling. Eventually I copped and they went straight on my feet. Ralph level comfort achieved.

Currently, I wear the Ultra Boosts by default.

Every time I step into my sneaker closet to pick something dope to wear, I end up deferring to the Boosts. My Jordans and SB’s make it out the closet only to be admired and put right back.

Boost will change your life like that.

I’ve even decided to pass on my grails, the Nike Air Jordan 6 Maroon. Spending $180 on new Ultra Boosts would feel way better than $220 for something I just wouldn’t be wearing comfortably.

The love for the rest of my sneaker collection won’t die, but it’ll never be the same after wearing Ultra Boosts. From the wide cushy foot bed to the sock-like feel of the Primeknit hugging your feet, these sneakers are the real deal Holyfield.

They feel so good, it’s actually tolerable to wait for your girlfriend to try on every product at the makeup store. Facts!

I’m not trying to sell you on the sneaker because if you don’t cop that means more for me. Just know that if you don’t own a pair, you are cheating yourself out of a really comfortable experience.

Treat yourself.

Good article Ray…seems very heartfelt…we need more of this from you…makes TSG a better place…and as far as the shoes…had the ultimate come up and cop’d a pair in my outlet (it had to be a mistake) for $80…my god…most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned….If I would have known I would have grabbed two pairs cause I would LOVE to run in these…but adidas will figure out a way to screw them up just like they did with the Flux….again great article…

Dope read bruh, forces and timbs were definitely the kicks I had coming up. Dunked on a nigga ass on a fast break in my timbs in high school. I have yet to try the boost tho but probably will scoop for Crimuh(Christmas).

  • Executive/Nasty Boy Click

Jordan’s are uncomfortable and for $200 they can chew my wood.

  • This shoe is overrated. I’ve tried them on so many times in store, and still can’t get myself to buy a pair because to me they look real basic and wack.

Nike Footscape woven or Footscape Magista a more comfortable and stylish than this adidas.

  • thank you, this def was a sincere piece. $80 tho?! Gotta tweet me that Oop next time you come up lol.Been a tough year on the site with major back end issues out of my control, but the pen game is coming back strong for 2016.

  • All day.

Dope article Ray.. I know what you mean about forces & timbs being a staple. Soooo no Maroon 6? Fact or fiction?

  • no maroons for me. Especially since White Cement 4s and Blk Metallic 5s confirmed for 2016. Now those I will cop and stare at forever.

  • C Brown

Glad to hear it…tell G to get it together man….we need TSG to get back to where it needs to be….

    Great Article Ray.

Trust Ray on this one, guys. The hype is real. Most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned. Even if you don’t totally like the way the shoe looks, buy a pair of these just for the comfort alone. Give your feet a break from those plastic leather and cardboard soled pieces of garbage.

  • Thad Greer

Pick these up and you’ll have a very Murr Crimuh.

  • velacooks

On point. The boost tech also put a handbrake on my shoegame collection. Never did I give much thought into comfort before. Now I do, before buying kicks now, I evaluate if it’ll last me the whole day? can i travel in these? Now my Jordan’s (all my other kicks) are for special occasions.

Damm adidas got ray on native advertising now

  • Another great article Ray. The UB’s and Uncaged UB’s have ruined my perception of things and I’ve been collecting and wearing all types of brands and kicks for over 2.5 decades. Came up on the OG J’s, Georgio Brutini’s, Avia, Asics, Etonic, Fila Grant Hills etc. I recently wore my uncaged and then Nike Flyknit back to back for a personal test.

The only other Nike I have for example that even comes close to the UB uncaged are my Nike Lunarfly 306, a highly underrated shoe I get compliments on regardless of the CW but eventually made it to Nike outlets and retail discount racks. The UB’s just feel like a sock while the Flyknit was stiff in more places and definitely didn’t have the same end of day comfort because of extensive walking and the mid-sole used. I couldn’t wait to get them off. I could sleep in my NMD’s or uncaged UB’s.

I have to admit, a large part of Adidas’s hype and success is justified. Your dude or anyone else claiming these are next level is onto to something. My second favorite pair of kicks at the moment are the NMD’s. Again Adidas and otherworldly comfort. At my age I’ll gladly take comfort over hype any day of the week and I’m sure my feet are quietly thanking me for it.

  • Yep. Last J’s I bought for regular wear, the Jordan 4 Oreo remastered are unbelievably uncomfortable. Within 4hrs of wear, just 4; both sides of my left foot(largest foot) were in slight discomfort in the toe box. No J I can think of even comes close to the UB’s and NMD’s. I’d go as far as saying because one is a basketball shoe it’s not even a fair comparison.

  • Executive One:1

Most Jordan’s feel like you’re walking on a hard wood floor with no shoes on. They should “remaster” from the inside out.

  • Luke Eyring

These shoes are the most comfortable ever. I have the Red/Orange knited Uncaged ones. Ive worn them for the last couple of weeks. theyre so awesome. Definately worth 180 dollars.

  • I’d have to agree with that 100%

  • Dox

No.Just…no. You either lying or just a Nike stan.
