Here’s how everything went down in Atlanta on August 5, 2016.
Being from Atlanta, I must say that last Friday was absolutely beautiful! I’ve never seen people so excited for a sneaker release. As we all know, this wasn’t your typical release – this drop was made exclusively for the city of Atlanta. It’s been a long time coming!
After a release date change, the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Nike Air Trainer SC High finally dropped on Friday, August 5. Yours truly spent the day at Atlanta’s most popular mall, Lenox Square, to do live reporting on the release. If you follow @TheShoeGame on Instagram, you saw real-time updates.
If you missed the real-time updates it’s all good because this recap video paints a vivid picture of the release. The most enjoyable part of reporting and interviewing people was seeing their passion for being an Atlanta native. To finally have a shoe ATL can call its own is definitely something to celebrate!
I was also pleased to see a diverse group of people who were anxious to add the ATL Trainer to their collection. One guy said it was his first pair of Nikes, while one lady told me, “I don’t stand in line for shoes. I don’t buy tennis shoes.” Yes, the ’96 Olympic Trainer forced everyone to step out of their comfort zone.
Aside from all the A-Town excitement, seeing people outfitted in Atlanta 1996 merch was hands down the icing on the cake! I mean, everyone expected me to be on full hypebeast mode for this shoe, so it wasn’t a surprise to see me laying out my outfit like it was the first day of school. But it was great to see other ATLiens wearing their Atlanta 1996 gear last Friday.
The shoes sold out with the quickness in Atlanta and via Nike’s SNKRS app, but pairs are available on eBay. You’ll have to pay the cost to be the boss, of course.
Thank you Nike. Thank you Atlanta. Thank you to the people who worked on this shoe (you know who you are!).
Sidenote: Ms. Estelle (old lady), shut everyone down with her jacket!
