Cool Hunting recently caught the unveiling of Nike Sportswear’s new 1 World AF1, featuring Hella Jongerious-designed Maharam fabric, at design shop Moss in New York City. The interpretation of the AF1 introduces a sneaker constructed of 100% wool felt textile called “Layers.” We caught up with Michael Maharam, Principal of Maharam, and Nike’s Global Design Director Jesse Leyva to gather some insights and opinions on the shoe.

I’m sorry but these are the worst AF1′s I’ve ever seen. I do appreciate what Michael and Jesse are saying the design came from but I honestly don’t know how they kept a straight face when being interviewed.
I AM NOT SAYING THIS BECAUSE I LOVE AIR FORCE 1′S.. THE MAHARAMS ARE PRETTY NICE!!! MOST PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY DONT LIKE THEM, HAVE NEVER SEEN A PAIR IN PERSON.. THE PICTURES ARE NOT THE PROPER JUDGE…
those “layers” look like my grandma’s sofa….not a good look at all!!!

DJCK you’re right I haven’t seen them in person so I’ll give you that (feel free to send me a pair lol) but I think they could’ve done a lot with the nice fabric felt. They definitely could have chosen different colors for the 14 layers/pieces. Even if the colors on the cloth behind Michael Maharam in the video was used that would’ve been better.
THOSE HAVE STRAIGHT GUCCI FEEL TO EM…I LIKE THOSE ALOT…HUNTING FOR THEM AS WE SPEAK

but i do have appreciation for them as art
