Nike Sportswear Presents: The History and Adoption of the Cortez aka Dopeman

Nike Cortez aka Dopeman
How many people can honestly say they have love for the Cortez? Depending on where you grew up you might call these Dopeman Nikes, but no matter what you call this shoe, you should at least be familiar with this OG Nike silhouette. “Run Forrest Run” is the popular Jenny quote from the 1994 movie Forrest Gump, and the Cortez was the sneaker that gave Forrest his turbo boost. Remember? Way before Tom Hanks and the crew was even thinking about making the movie, the Cortez was already a classic shoe that didn’t need any introduction. Whether you’re from the Westcoast, Eastcoast, Southside, Northside, Midwest, or overseas, you know the Cortez.
The real question is how much do you really know about the Cortez? NikeSportswear put a few informative videos together about the Nike Cortez. The videos cover the History, Adoption, and Evolution (coming soon) of the Cortez. The history video features Geoff Hollister (Nike employee #3) and Nelson Farris (Nike Director of Corporate Education).
Westcoast and Eastcoast legends speak on the adoption of the Cortez. Los Angeles natives Mister Cartoon, Estevan Oriol, and Patrick Martinez tell their stories about the “Dopemans”. New York’s DJ EMZ, Ken Swift, and Eric Haze speak on the Cortez through the eyes of NYC.
