For years Nike has taken heat about their factories/sweatshops overseas, and it’s a sticky topic that most people choose to ignore. However, on TSG we report on all types of news whether good, bad, or controversial. At the end of the day news is news, so don’t get mad at us. Check out the video and below is a brief summary of what the video is about.
Australian TV Channel 7 exposed what it calls “Human trafficking on a massive scale” involving Vietnamese and other workers at Nike’s sweatshop contract factories in Malaysia.
Let us know your thoughts in the comments section…
There’s only something being done because it’s been exposed, and they couldn’t just not do anything and get away with it. It’s not a good look. They knew all along most likely… who knows. This isn’t the first time there’s been news like this.
maybe its the way i look at things but i thought the way this was reported was a tad biased against Nike…of course the conditions are horrible and something had to be done but this is one of hundreds of contractors for nike and it is up to the contractor to make sure conditions are up to par…they only mentioned the contractor once or twice in the report and dragged nike through the mud which i suppose isn’t a surprise since they are one of the biggest and most recognizable brands in the world…in the end though most of the clothes we wear are made in textile plants abroad and its not like this is a specific nike thing…i think a report on more than one brand/company would have been more effective and had more of a positive impact on the workers in these conditions then just trying to sour Nikes rep
TSG thanks for posting this! I concur with Evan it was pretty biased against Nike, when it was Hytex that won the contract and was allowing this to happen. And that’s not to take away any guilt from Nike, I’m sure they know what’s happening but only acted until it was exposed. The truth is that Nike is spending most of its money in advertising and must maximize profit by outsourcing labour contracts to places that will make it the cheapest. Heck even in Toronto where I’m from, back in the late 90’s Nike was also using sweat shops. Besides the human suffering that occurs in these factories, what is most problematic is that once they’re exposed or find a better contract they leave that place. So in this case I blame the governments for letting these companies leave without any obligations, because once they leave all you’ll have left is a community of workers without jobs.
This is why i buy “fakes” as well as the authentic. They cost around the same to produce. When I buy a pair of fakes for $35 that money goes straight to the factory that makes the shoes. companies that make fakes are contracted factories that continue to make these items once the contract has expired. The quality is good sometimes but if you get a bad pair, oh well. And the report was not biased, It is nike’s job to supervise the situation that a contractor has established for its workers. obviously that didnt happen for some time, which leads me to believe that nike knew what was going on. Yeah the contractor is a P.O.S. for letting those conditions get that way, but you know why they are that way? It saves them $$$$$. And in big business, if you can make money getting away with this, well this is how it will be. I own a business and i use contractors. you know why? becuase it cost me less money than hiring employees. And I am definatley responsible for the contractor actions, that is why i must stay on top of things. All nike tells their contractors is “Dont get caught or the blame is on you”. these poor people are taken advantage of because of how greedy people are. It’s a shame. I’m still going to buy nike fake or real.
I don’t really agree w/ 23 edge and Evan, but i see where they’re coming from. Bt still, Nike is reaping in profits like crazy from $100+ shoes. They are a multi-million dollar company and i don’t think its hard for them to spend more money to regulate conditions in factories. I’m not saying im gonna stop buying nikes, but i think nike is largely responsible for something like this. I understand that businessmen gotta max their profits, but it just shows how little nike cares about business ethics. And its important to keep in mind not to look at the sweatshop laborers as a number, but look at them as people like yourself. just imagine putting yourself in one of their shoes (haha shoes) and try to imagine living their miserable sweatshop life for a day. It’ll feel pretty bad, and all those people, each one of them, lives like that.
Man.. I kick myself in the ass everytime i buy a pair of Nikes. For the people who know me, yall know i got that viet in me. So it even hurts more. But man, i can’t stop my addiction!
U FOOLS R STILL GONNA BUY THE SHOES, THAT SOME LITTLE POOR KID SLAVED TO MAKE. THEY HAVE PLENTY OF SWEATSHOPS AND U WANNA KNOW Y THEY GET AWAY WIT IT, BECUZ IGNORANT CONSUMERS MAKE THEM RICH AND POWERFUL.
who knows if the reporters are actually at a legitimate shop run by nike. these could be shops that produce all the fake shoes too. u only believe what u see.
C Mills- Fuk what you’re talking about. You must be another ignorant ass kid on this site. you sound like you care about what other people think about you. you must be affraid to get laughed at on the streets. Im not, you know why, cus nobody can tell if mine are fake unless they are a crazy color or they take’em off my feet and inspect them. Since you’re on nike’s nut hairs, why dont you call them and ask them why they continue to allow fakes to be sold. Its all business. If nike REALLY wanted to do something about it. there would be no more cases of sweatshops or fake factories. Its all about the money it would cost them to enforce rules. But yeah its nothing to buy real or fake.\
All of you guys have a point to make. My point in this is that nobody has a say in this except Nike it’self. We are not workers for them and can’t do anything about this situation. I would have to agree on lot’s of you in the way that it does feel wrong to go out and buy Nike wear but we all know that this is probably not the 1st time we all heard about this type of situations.
this is shameful, but at least Nike is doing a little something about it.
I feel bad for those people…At least there is something being done to prevent stuff like this from happening.

Having been over there for a while, the real offenders are ADIDAS and DIESEL. That’s more Thailand, though. I can’t speak for Malaysia.

I don’t wear fakes, but… the idea of some malnourished family making the real ones makes them less appealing also.
