Confessions of a Sneaker Addict – Part 19

| June 29, 2011 | Comments (33)

Everyone who collects sneakers or just has a desire to always have the latest kicks knows about multiple trends that are evident among the sneaker culture. Whether they are the hotness or the wackness is up for debate, but the reality is that they are apparent among many people today whether it be the casuals, the shoe collectors, the heat rockers, the celebrities, the kids, the adults, just about anyone you can think of. Now, without any further ado, does the following confession apply to you?

Sneaker Schedule

The good ole sneaker schedule, whether people realize it or not, this pertains to many people. What is the sneaker schedule exactly? In layman’s terms, to plan what shoe one is going to wear each day. Seems obvious enough, but it is not as simple as that. Some people may have over 100 pairs of shoes to make it very easy to devise this schedule while others may only have 10 or 20 pairs total. Regardless of how many shoes someone owns, the sneaker schedule can always remain intact.

If someone owns 200 pairs of shoes, they will definitely have more options to go about planning out their schedule. Whether they are planning for days, weeks, or months, they have more than enough backup shoes just in case something does not go down correctly (weather, shoe gets messed up, etc.). When someone owns less shoes, it can still work out. From my experience, I have seen people who have their everyday shoe and if they are going out or just want to bring out the hotness, they switch it up.

Now the question is, why do people follow sneaker schedules? Multiple reasons for this so let’s just knock out the basic ones.

1. To rock all their shoes. Face it, once someone has a set of favorite shoes, it gets REALLY hard to stray away from those pairs. The sneaker schedule helps to UNDS all those shoes someone has stacked up in the closet. As fellow TSGers would say, WEAR YOUR KICKS.

2. Weather. For some people, when it rains or snows, that knocks off the majority of kicks they can wear that day. It does turn into a mild case of OSD when the only reason someone is checking the weather is to see what shoes that can wear but hey, we’ve all done it from time to time.

3. Want to differ from the masses. This is very apparent with big releases. Foams are dropping and someone gets a pair. Problem is, they do not want to UNDS right away because that’s what everyone else is doing. Solution? Let them sit on ice for a few months and BAM, bust them out when the hype has died down. Personally not my cup of tea but you can tell when people intentionally do this.

4. To bring out the heat when necessary. This is usually for sneaker events, going out to break some necks, or just because. Some people have those neck-breakers (http://theshoegame.com/articles/confessions-of-a-sneaker-addict-part-9.html) that they want to wear but they don’t want to wear them every day. Maybe you have a pair that only sees the light of day once or twice a month if that.

There are many more reasons why sneaker schedules exist. For those thinking, “I don’t do that,” it can even happen mentally. Having a sneaker schedule does not mean someone sits down with a calendar and writes what they are wearing each day, it’s more planning out what kicks to wear in the future whether it be a few days or anything. When is the last time you just grabbed a random pair of shoes and rolled out with your day? Usually you already have the shoe in your head before you start your day. (Trust me, OSD is non-controllable.)

My sneaker schedule is all mental and just happens. I don’t plan it nor do I even think about it, it just happens. I try to get wear out of all my shoes so I have an unintentional sneaker schedule. For more clarification, IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU SIT AND PLAN EACH AND EVERY DAY, although it can mean that. For my sneaker schedule, it’s sort of like a mental check list. Go downstairs to roll out for the day and take a look at my sneakers. If I’ve already worn one in the past, let’s say week or so, I mentally check it off and refuse to wear it for a set period of time.

What kind of sneaker schedule do you follow? How many pairs of shoes do you own and how do you get them all in the rotation? For the people who have over 150 or 200 pairs, do you try to get them all worn once a year?

Very good read and let’s see no exact count but would guesstimate upwards 600 – 750 pair and for me more difficult to schedule a rotation because a great deal of my time is in the classroom or at office with suit or slacks. Some I actually wear once every two years believe it or not. However those rare sneaker events I attend or when I go to a sneaker boutique (especially the few locally where staff thinks they wrote the book on sneakers) then I make a concentrated effort to go “highlander” on your ass and be the only ONE, whether it’s a pair of wearable Ewings, Borg Diadora, Xanthus etc.

  2. Alan says:

My sneaker schedule is just like yours, mental and it just happens. I own only about 15 pairs that fit comfortably, and I’ll just have it in the back of my mind when I go to choose a shoe how long it’s been since I’ve worn them. Nice, uh article(?), jedi!

  3. Royal S says:

Sneaker Routine. Really it has to be for me the weather. I live in Cali & the worst weather we get is rain, but doesn’t mean I’m going to wear some spacejam 11′s or Aqua 8′s while it’s raining. During the spring/summertime “any kicks go”. That’s the easiest time to plan what kicks to weare in a month in advance without worrying about the weather. It’s not easy in the wintertime for most people due to their areas so sneaker schedule should apply as written down on a calender in your room June 1st-September 30th.

  4. Metatron says:

i usually choose the shoe i wear based on a couple of factors 1) the shirt im wearing at the time 2) how long its been since i last wore a shoe (so i can get more wear out of the barely worn pairs and less wear out of the heavily worn ones) 3) what the weather’s like that day and 4) whether or not necks need to be snapped in half on a particular occasion.

  5. DunksRMe says:

When I get a “certain” new pair of shoes, I do follow number 3, and not b/c other people are wearing their new shoes as well, but just b/c whenever I buy a new pair of shoes, I let them sit until it is their time to be worn in my rotation. And sometimes, it’s just because I don’t feel the need to UNDS a shoe immediately when I get them.
    .
As far as number 4 goes, I don’t just break out heat when something like a shoe event comes up because I feel people do that just for show, (aka a hype beast), and if I were to, it would be a pair of shoes that I’m sure nobody at the event would have on, or a pair of shoes from who knows when ago.
    .
Now I do have sort of a mental shoe calendar, b/c I usually know what shoes I’m going to wear before I wear them, and I also follow that “rule” sort of when it comes to when I wear my shoes, as in if I wear a pair of shoes, then that pair probably won’t get worn again for weeks, even months possibly, just because I have enough shoes to go around, that it doesn’t worry me.
    .
Lastly, as far as my shoes go, i wear all of them, and/or will wear all of them at some point .

  6. DunksRMe says:

Lately though, I’ve been finding myself to just randomly put a pair of shoes on that hasn’t been worn yet or worn in a while, so for a while now I haven’t been going on the shoe “mental calendar”.

  7. AlSneaks says:

I have about 120 or so pairs of kicks. with about a 20 pair regular rotation and mix in others randomly. I never plan what I’m going to wear. I just throw on clothes and grab the first shoe I can think of that goes with it.

  8. DunksRMe says:

If anything, sometimes I find myself also not knowing what shoes to wear next!

  9. DJ_ImperialD says:

im not sure on an exact number but im scratching around the 200 mark…and my rotation is off just like Mr. Vegas since i work in an office only day i can wear a pair of kicks is friday…and the weekend…but my sch differs from time to time sometimes i will wear the same shoes 10x’s in one week cause im too lazy to put in back in the box and its the first shoe i see and be like F it lol…i dont really care what the weather is when it comes to shoes…i i still will put on the shoes as long as i know my feet wont get wet…

  10. DJ_ImperialD says:

and i havent gotten to wear all my kicks lol i forget about shoes when i try to think of what to wear…

  11. Rfatcats says:

I own over 300 pairs and I go by feel. I love the option of having options. Being that I wear white tees I can rock anything at all times. I defintely just go by my mood for the day. Sometimes I do grab a pair for the”WOW” factor. But often its the times I’m just on some regular shit and I get questions and stares… It’s great having a mean shoe game…

  12. bware113 says:

I have somewhere near 40 or so. so I dont have the vast collection like vegas up top. But I do follow rule number 3 unless it’s something not hyped by everyone. As said before I like keeping my shoes while everyone else runs thiers into the ground.
But like my other corporate comrades I work in an office and can only wear sneakers maybe 3 days of the week. I dont wear my sneakers like I used to cause I dont feel like pulling the box, or it’ll be raining (I live in the SE part of Tornado valley) so i’ll just rock my sperrys. I do however keep a mental note of when the last time I did wear a shoe so that they all get worn atleast once in a 6 months time frame.
    .
    Reasons used: 2 & 3

  13. John B. says:

I’m a weather checker for sure…cause the weather here in TN is bipolar alot of times. Always make sure if it rains to pull out the leather instead of suede or nubuck. Sometimes I will plan ahead to the next day the night before but that’s pretty much it. Most of the time I’m rushing out the door so I grab a shirt and the first pair that goes with it and roll on with my day. Excellent read JJH..as usual man.

  14. aaron says:

Damn! I’m a hypebeast! I have no idea how many pair of sneaks I have! Never considered the Sneaker Calendar, my problem is I usually double up and still have a problem wearing a pair even when I have multiples. Plus when you have a lot of kicks I find it hard to actually choose what pair to wear. I attend a lot of sneaker events and that’s the only time I’ll really take into consideration what kicks I’ll wear. I wasn’t aware that breaking out your gems for a sneaker event made you a hypebeast thanks for the info Mr Dunks. Good read jjh

  15. 4DRUMZ says:

Living in NW PA seasonal scheduling is a must! Summer is nice for the white and brightly colored kicks but I’ve found myself still pulling out all the black/grey CWs a lot this summer anyway!

I tend to pull out 3-4 that go into heavy rotation for the whole week. It’s just a pain to move all the boxes around in my little closet so whatever gets moved to the top and is easy to get at gets worn the most. Clean them all up and then rotate a few more pairs up for the next week!

  16. J Dizzle { Lou} says:

Good read. I only do 2 things in regards to schedule: I don’t wear the same kicks on back-to-back days and I wear my beaters once a week to cut the grass. Boom

  17. @BIGGFREDD says:

It all depends on what the agenda is for the day. if say you’re going to a bbq or a house party, i try not to get too fresh cuz i dont want beer or chicken wing crumbs on my kicks. like most, i belong to the suit and tie crown so weekends are the time for the freshness, although i do try to wear pairs that i havent rocked recently while walkin my dog. WEAR YOUR KICKS!

  18. 203Sneakerking says:

I Have 119 Pairs Of Sneakers And Most Likely I Won’t Wear All My Sneakers Cause I work A Full Time Job And Also If I Don’t Have My Sneaker Tee To Match The Sneaker I Won’t Wear The Sneaker But I Hope I will Be Able To Wear All My Sneakers But Nike Won’t Give Me A Break It’s Like I Will Wear A New Pair But When I wear A new pair I’m going 2 buy another pair SMH #203SneakerKing

  19. 4mosa says:

    Great read Jawrduhn! :)

SO, imma go with option number 2 as the main driver of my daily wears. All 4 you listed are amongst the choices I make, but living in the Netherlands where we’re supposed to have 4 seasons, but in reality we have about 2 weeks of Summer. So I check the weather the night before and I check the weather when I get up. Then starts the ritual, where I dress from toe to head.

In comes number 1. Sure I would like to WYKAD for all my kicks, but I do tend to rotate a small selection, followed by the occasional odd-kick.

To comment on number 3. I rarely keep kicks on ice intentionally, but hey, it happens that I grab a pair, don’t un-DS it straight away and end up wearing it much later on.

Number 4 is always nice, and I do “save” (i.e. read as “wear scarcely”) certain kicks for more special occasions where necks need to be snapped! LOL
BUT…..those are usually vintage/OG kicks as those are not a common sight here. Contrary to all the PATTA AM1′s that get some wear-time at events here in NL.

I do need to add that the daily morning ritual of deciding which pair I’m gonna wear vs. the expected weather conditions takes up more time than all the other morning activities there are. Talk about OSD…..

  20. jays says:

1 and 2 for sure but basically a peek out the window and i’m good. nobody in my circle of friends is a sneakerhead so 3 and 4 do not apply. i went to one convention and that was the end of it for me, not really good for people looking for only a few select pairs. i think 3 and 4 are for people who need and want useless attention from a stranger.

  21. Steven B says:

ha thats how it is every month in my phone

  22. SNKRTRNK® says:

My whole thing is being unpredictable, unscheduled and unplanned for. Funny thing is ATL’s dunk junkie and I have showed up wearing the same pair on a couple of occasions. Wuddup homeboy! G! Wuddup! Great column!

  23. BigfootNJ says:

I have 40+ pairs. I don’t wear a shoe more than once every five days. If it’s raining, I have a few pairs of Vans to chill in. If it’s snowing, I’m probably rocking Timbs. And I’m guilty of #3 with my White Cement IIIs. I didn’t wear them until the Monday after the True Blues dropped.

  24. Tony Snow says:

I got about 25-30 pairs all j’s i have not started to get more nike or anything else till i get my 1-23 colletion down i just need bout 5 more nd im good. i have my favs that i rock more then others but when it’s time to step out to something special i take it up a notch.. i have like two ds only. my last shots from the cdp nd xvii from the cdp. i dnt really do it ahead of time but i do take the same things in consideration when i rock my kicks.

  25. MBall423 aka Honey Badger says:

I have somewhere between 35-40 pairs, and I definitely have a sneaker calendar in my mind. I never wear the same pair twice in one week, and I don’t wear suede/nubuck in the rain/snow. As far as reason #3, that is NEVER the case for me haha. As soon as I get a pair of shoes, I throw them on my feet. There’s no better feeling than a new pair of shoes on my feet, so why would I prolong that feeling?

  26. Lem says:

I have about 35 pairs. I typically pick what shoe I’m going to wear based on the outfit. If I’m going to church and the occasion calls for a suit then I will put on a more dressier pair. Like the Air Jordan 2009 S23. Believe it or not they really look good with a black suit!

  27. Grape Walker says:

90% of my shoes have never been worn. The one’s I do rock see rotation on the weekends unless the weather is bad and then its a plain af1 mid black or white for outdoor use then I may switch up the sneakers if I’m going to be inside that day/night.

  28. J-Dawggggg says:

use low top kostons for everyday use (beaters) unless one day im going somewhere and feel like throwing on a pair of retros. like with the cardinals that just came out, i rocked em once cause they looked so nice, then put em away. gonna have em in the closet for a few weeks then pull em out later when there’s less hype.

  29. brownw says:

never have a schedule. just have consistent beaters to wear like the cough drop foams and retro cement 3s.special occasions such as 420 and others require some heat to be worn

  30. Justin says:

my schedule consist of weather and my clothes that are clean. I only have 9 pairs of shoes 7 of them are hot(griffeys, yotr 7s,cool grays, wolf grays, the jordan 4 collezione, kobes, and the autoforce 180 mids) the other pairs are fusion 12s and air force ones of course. but in indiana, its rained soooo much lately its hard for me to wear the nice shoes yk. and for some shoes i dnt have the clothes to match that are clean so that kinda sucks to. gotta step up my swagg game haha

  31. PocketFulofJays says:

I choose the shoe im going to rock on the shirt or snapback im rocking and and i dont plan it just comes out of my mind, i haave 35 pairs

  32. sek says:

i have about 60+ pairs put since i moved to a smaller apartment i put a lot of em in storage and kept about 10 sneakers i rotate. In general if its raining or snowing i have either boots or certain pair of kicks ill wear for that day. If im going out to the movies, dinner, party etc ill choose something specific in advance. sometimes i just throw on a good ole plain tee with whatever sneakers i see first and a yankee fitted(cant go wrong)
