Nike Air Tech Challenge

It’s been 17 years and the “Agassi” Air Tech Challenge will return this year. TSG was the first site with detailed pics of the sample Air Tech Challenges. We all know this pair of Agassi’s is the true meaning of heat, and one of the most remembered sneakers from 1990. When people found out these kicks were going to be retroed some were excited and others were upset. Around the time we did the article on the samples many people were extremely mad since Nike took away the hottest features.

When people realized Nike replaced the hot lime with a sonic yellow colorway that really put a damper on everyone. As if the replacement of the hot lime wasn’t good enough, Nike also replaced the speckled soaring tennis ball on the back with a new tennis ball that has a swoosh in the middle. Check out all the pics and you will clearly see the major difference in the original Air Tech Challenge and the retro. I know this is depressing, but I had to this comparison for our community. The Air Tech Challenge Retro will hit stores this Spring/Summer.

Take a deep breath and try to enjoy the pics!!

  1. damnnnn, those og’s are nice…

    retro’s aren’t!!!

    but i’mma get the grey’s, dawgg…

  2. The colorway and Tennis ball logo comparison is nice but the overall shoe comparison is skewed as you’re comparing a Youth OG and Adult Retro. The Youth and Adult OG’s had different design features. Either way, the retro stinks.

  3. fresh ogs for sure….

  4. TheShoeGame does it again…

The pics\setup are really nice. I KNOW you didn’t take those Groc, LOL.

  6. Blow me on this one Nike.

  7. What’s the reasoning behind erasing the helpful comment that I posted before? I also noticed the first comment has been edited.

  8. The comment was never erased, it had to go through moderation. Everyone has the right to express how they feel. I agree that the retro sucks and I wish Nike would have kept the “hot lime” colorway.

  9. yo these is sick i love the fact that all these old skool kicks is coming back. when do these come out i have to kno.

  10. yeah i agree with g because that hot lime color way is sick.

  11. They will release soon, just stay tuned to TSG News for more updates on the “Agassi” Tech Challenge Retro.

  12. ey groc i’d take those og agassi’s off you.. too bad both are GS sizes. :(

  13. I went through 3 pairs of these and 2 of the purples back in the day and aside from the change of the rear heel logo, the new retro one is closer to the original than the pictured Youth version. The yellow is an accurate color of the retail version. The front toe is correct. The neoprene tongue is correct. The heavy print non-stitched logo on the tongue is correct. The heel is incorrect and should be black like the Youth version. Agassi’s 1990 US Open version may have been closer to color of the pictured Youth version.

Remember, these are the Air Tech Challenge III. There are still 2 earlier versions that need retroing.

I still don’t know why the Blazing Ball logo was replaced. My guess is that it was part of a line called ‘Challenge Court’ which could be registered under another company or was created in cooperation with Agassi who is now retired with Adidas.

Are these going to be a general release?

  14. As far I know these will be a GR. I can’t see them being limited, but then again I can’t see why Nike changed the hot lime to sonic yellow…

  15. originals look way better. thank you for this comparsion. i could care less about the sizes because the colors are off and the tennis ball is gone. TheShoeGame.com always gives great news, don’t stop, keep it up!

  16. The blazing ball logo could not be used because Andre Agassi helped design it.

  17. Anybody got a tight release date for these? Or a list of stores that will carry them? I’m not a big shoe collector– just a tennis fan– so I don’t really do follow this part of the industry like Jordan collectors do. But if they decide to retro the previous two Challenge models, I’m screwed!

  18. finishline.com

    You’re welcome.

  19. And thanks. Already found them by accident, but thanks anyway, and keep the scoops coming. FWIW I think these are way better than a lot of people were saying– the color’s a lot closer than I expected. Yeah I want the original flying tennis ball on the back, and I want the white part at the heel to be black, but they’re still rad. The arch is too far back, and feels uncomfortable as hell, but I’ll just replace the insole. These shoes are fresh.

  20. And FYI finishline.com has a printable $10 coupon. My total came in under $100.
