High top sneakers were a staple in professional Basketball since the beginning. Everyone was under the impression that the higher the shoe, the more ankle support it provided. Low tops we're definitely out of the question.
Brands did create low cuts of iconic basketball sneakers such as the Nike Air Force 1 and Converse Chuck Taylor, but they were considered to be for casual wear only.
Low tops didn't become a thing in the NBA until Kobe Bryant and Nike designer Eric Avar changed the game with the Kobe 4.
